MIFX’s design system wasn’t working: one search bar rendered three different ways, bottom sheets existed in four stylings, and tappable controls sat inside the iPhone safe area where the OS draws its own. Underneath the surface inconsistencies there were no real foundations—no agreed color logic, no shared type scale, no spacing system. When the CTO announced a full codebase rewrite in Q1 2024, design got a window it would never get again. This case study covers Leverage, the system I built to replace it: foundations first, spanning the app, Client Area, website, and IB Dashboard, shipped alongside the rewrite so the new code was born already speaking the right language. It is also the story of getting it approved—an engineering argument for the rebuild, a demo for the timeline, and a measurement framework for the question of whether a design system earns its place against feature work.

The foundation of our design system is like the fundamentals of a solid trading strategy, each element plays a vital role in achieving seamless execution. It brings together Colors, Typography, Iconography, Spacing & Radius, Border Width, and Shadows & Effects. Just as every trade requires balance and precision, these elements work together to create a cohesive and intuitive experience. Colors signal meaning, typography ensures clarity, icons provide quick recognition, while spacing, borders, and shadows maintain structure and flow. This foundation ensures the design stays consistent, scalable, and ready for whatever market conditions (or new features) come our way.
